29 Nov – 1 Dec 2018. Workshop on Metric Bounds and Transversality (WoMBaT) 2018

The third Workshop on Metric Bounds and Transversality (WoMBaT 2018) took place in Melbourne 29 November – 1 December 2018. It was dedicated to celebrating A/Prof Alex Kruger's contributions to variational analysis and optimisation on the occasion of his 65th birthday.

The program included keynote lectures by four international experts:

  • Prof Marco López, University of Alicante (Spain), CIAO Adjunct Professor
  • Prof Juan Enrique Martínez-Legaz, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Spain)
  • Prof Ewa Bednarczuk, Polish Academy of Sciences
  • Prof Michel Théra, University of Limoges (France), CIAO Adjunct Professor

and many invited talks by researchers from Australia, Vietnam and the Netherlands, including three CIAO researchers, two CIAO honorary members and two PhD students.

The topics of the workshop included error bounds, metric (sub-)regularity, Aubin property and calmness, transversality of collections of sets, subdifferential characterisations and applications of these properties to estimating the convergence of fundamental optimisation algorithms.

A/Professor Alex Kruger, CIAO Research Director, said "WoMBaT provides a great opportunity to bring international and Australian researchers and their students together for knowledge sharing and collaboration development in mathematics."

The fourth WoMBaT is scheduled for December 2019.
