Health workforce

School researchers have a track record of activity in a range of projects in the broad field of workforce, workforce development, and work health and well-being research. These include projects relating to the prevalence, antecedents, consequences and prevention of incivility and aggression, work health and safety, and organisational culture. Researchers are also involved in a global incivility project, spanning Australia, Asia, Ireland and the US.

Extensive work is also completed in the field of practice and professional development with a focus on the educational preparation of clinicians though simulation and clinical placement research. Further, research work in relation to graduate readiness and a range of research programs evaluating the impact of workforce educational interventions.

Additionally, the Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH), located in the School, has a 40 year history of work health and safety research, supporting a broad range of practitioners achieving masters and doctorate-level research training and qualifications

Work health and safety, including workplace aggression research

Research in this area could be undertaken under the banner of VIOSH. An independent workplace aggression or related topic could be pursued, involving the collection of new data, or existing nursing and medical data sets could be accessed for a research project in this and related fields.

Clinical medical practice research

Potential research projects could draw on the Medicine in Australia: Balancing Employment and Life (MABEL) study dataset, conducted over 11 consecutive years to 2019. Some nursing and allied health related data are available in the MABEL dataset, mainly associated with general and specialist practices.

Overall, in these fields, potential research projects could include:

  1. Work health and safety, including mental health and well-being
  2. Workplace aggression and incivility
  3. Educational preparation and professional development
  4. Workforce resilience
  5. Health and aged care workforce dynamics (including in relation to internal and external drivers)
  6. Health and aged care workforce education, training and capacity development.
