Our history

The Centre for Informatics and Applied Optimization (CIAO) is a unique research centre, established in 2001 and located within the School of Engineering and Information Technology.

The spirit and values within CIAO have been cast by its founding director, Professor Alex Rubinov. As a consummate collaborator and brilliant mathematician, Professor Rubinov endowed the Centre with values of utmost respect for all people, excellence in the pursuit of knowledge, and integrity in all affairs.

Professor Rubinov passed away in 2006. He published 17 books and over 200 journal articles and supervised many PhD students.

CIAO integrates key fields of research in mathematics and information technology. It is an internationally recognised research centre, delivering basic and applied research and the technologies that underpin these areas, and their application to industry and government.
