About the program
The Bachelor of Information Technology (Professional Practice) is an innovative degree that has been developed in conjunction with industry and is recognised as national best practice by the Australian Computer Society.
This innovative program interleaves a 1600 hour internship experience with IBM® throughout your degree. Your placement hours are flexible, and commence in second year - usually, you will attend placement one to two days a week during semester and more frequently during non-teaching periods.
You are placed into real workplace teams and mentored as you gradually take on more responsibility and contribute as a meaningful team member. The skills you develop in this contemporary work environment helps you become a valued and work-ready graduate.
Internships undertaken may be in areas such as mainframe enterprise systems support and development, project management, web development, programming and help desk support. In this real work environment, the availability of internship areas is determined by the business needs.
When you successfully complete the program you will be encouraged to apply for a graduate position with IBM® or another industry sponsor*.
The first year of the Bachelor of Information Technology (Professional Practice) consists of full-time study – on campus at Mt Helen (Ballarat) or online.
You can commence in the first year, or from second year with credit if you have successfully completed the equivalent of a first year of a Bachelor of Information Technology at Federation University or at another higher education institution.
From second year, your time will be divided between study and your internship on-site with IBM® in Ballarat or Canberra. You will receive a scholarship of up to $38,400# as you engage in 1600 hours work experience.
Your placement hours are flexible, and you will usually attend placement one or two days a week during semester and more days during non-teaching periods. During heavy academic periods when assignments and exams place heavy demands on you, it is possible to negotiate to reduce your workplace attendance.
