Susan is the Coordinator Heritage Strategy at the City of Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. She is managing the roll out of UNESCO's Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) pilot program in Ballarat through the signing of a Strategic Cooperation Agreement with the World Heritage Institute of Training and Research in Asia and the Pacific (WHITRAP) in Shanghai. Susan has been an active member of UNESCO's global historic urban landscape program, contributing to international discussions in France, China and Ecuador as well as in Australia. Susan has coordinated two International Symposiums on the Historic Urban Landscape approach in Ballarat in collaboration with Federation University Australia, Deakin University and WHITRAP. She has helped build the HUL approach into the City of Ballarat's long-term growth strategy: Today, Tomorrow, Together: The Ballarat Strategy. Prior to her work on the HUL program she was instrumental in developing the City of Ballarat's 'Preserving Ballarat's Heritage Strategy' which addresses heritage management challenges using a preventive change management approach. The City of Ballarat's work in this area has been recognised by the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) and the Heritage Council of Victoria.

Areas of expertise

Susan has always had a passion for history and heritage. A professional musician and former art teacher, her background also includes a variety of corporate and public sector roles. She combines her creativity, multidisciplinary skill set and passion for heritage in her work. Susan has recently completed the Master Cultural Heritage at Deakin University in order to further her practical research to better deal with contemporary challenges facing practitioners, local citizens and their heritage.
