Biography

Kate White is Adjunct Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education and Arts at Federation University Australia, and co-founder and co-Director of the Women in Higher Education Management. Her research focuses on gender and higher education, career progression for women in science, and women’s academic careers. Kate has been a visiting researcher at Linkoping and Uppsala Universities, Sweden; CIPES, University of Porto, and the University of Limerick.

Kate is the author/co-author/co-editor of 16 books and numerous academic articles. Her latest books are: Keeping Women in Science (2015) published by Melbourne University Press and White, K. and O’Connor, P.  (eds.) (2017), Gendered Success in Higher Education: global perspectives (Palgrave: Basingstoke).

Research interests

Kate has been Director/Co-Director of the international research consortium, the Women in Higher Education Management (WHEM) Network since 2007.

The Network has established a high-profile international reputation and has published three books: Gender, Power and Management (2011), now a standard text on gender and HE, Generation and Gender in Academia (2013), and Gendered Success in Higher Education (2017). The latest book featured in an article by Darragh O’Keeffe in the Higher Education Supplement of The Australian on 21 June 2017. Kate convened WHEM Network Project Meetings in Vienna 2014, Porto 2015, Gothenburg 2015, Aveiro 2016, and London July 2017.

Current major research/editorial projects are:

  • Scoping a new project for the Women in Higher Education Management Network, tentatively titled: Assessing the gendered impact of the neoliberal university on academics’ wellbeing
  • Invitation from 18-19 March 2019 to participate in an international Think Tank on Women and Organisations, American University of Sharjah, UAE.
  • Member of advisory panel for GENERA for a Spanish research consortium that is undertaking a three-year project promoting a more inclusive and competitive knowledge economy. The project received funding, including funding for a post doc, from the Spanish Economic Ministry
  • Editing a Special Issue on Gender and Masculinities in Careers and Leadership in Higher Education for the International Journal of Gender, Science and Technology (due for publication in April 2018).
  • Member of the Editorial Board of Behavioral Sciences, an international open access journal. http://www.mdpi.com/journal/behavsci/editors. Invited to be editor of a special issue for the journal.
  • Member of the Editorial Board of the Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Equality and Diversity: An International Journal. https://ipedjournal.com/the-editorial-board/
