Apprenticeship program meets local construction demand

Federation TAFE has partnered with Apprenticeships Victoria to help create a pipeline of skilled workers to enter the construction industry and contribute to Victoria’s Big Build.

The Big Build Apprenticeships program is focused on creating a pool of trained infrastructure workers to work on major projects such as the West Gate Tunnel, New Footscray Hospital, North East Link and Ballarat Health Services upgrade.

Federation TAFE’s Ballarat skills and jobs centre has been working since 2021 to help locals interested in entering construction apprenticeships, with 45 participants to date.

Federation TAFE's Pro Vice-Chancellor (Vocation Education and Training), Liam Sloan, said "Federation TAFE’s priority courses focus on training for in-demand jobs, we want our students to come out job-ready and into industries that have jobs waiting for them."

"For our community to thrive, we know what building partnerships with industry will allow our students to fill the gaps of skills shortages."

Currently, there is a demand for workers to help meet the ambitious plans for public infrastructure in the Central Victoria region, including the most popular apprenticeships, building and construction and civil construction.

Those who are interested can access initial career counselling, employment assistance and to be connected to Apprenticeships Victoria.

Assistance is available to applicants who may need additional support with their language and numeracy, or mental health.

Apprenticeships Victoria launched last year and coordinates and oversees all aspects of the delivery of apprenticeships, as part of the Victorian Government’s unprecedented investment in the training and skills sector.

Cameron Baker, Executive Director of Apprenticeships Victoria, said "Victoria is in the middle of an unprecedented boom in public infrastructure – and this growth is dependent on a skilled workforce. Apprenticeships Victoria will ensure there is a steady pipeline of workers in years to come by making training and employment opportunities available to Victorians from all backgrounds.

"Federation TAFE and other Victorian training organisations are essential partners in ensuring apprentices and trainees are supported on their pathway to a rewarding career.”
