Biography

Dr Kathy Swinkels is Lecturer in early childhood and primary education.

Dr Swinkels’ research focus is on mathematics in the early childhood setting, drawing on theories such as communities of practice and socio-culturalism to explore how teachers engage in mathematically rich interactions with children. Kathy’s current research explores how teachers use toys and games to teach mathematics.

Kathy is one of the early childhood special interest group convenors for the Australian Association for Research in Education (AARE) and is a member of the Australian Graduates in Early Childhood Studies (AGECS) and Early Childhood Australia (ECA).

Kathy has taught in early childhood centres in Australia and the United States for many years and made the transition to teaching educational students in 2010. She started at Federation University Australia in 2017 with the opening of the Berwick campus.
