In 1955 Ron Furlong completed his fourth year as a Diploma student at the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB). During his time as a student he was well known for his sporting ability, especially in Cricket. The 1955 SMB Students Magazine records: 'Ron Furlong, our intrepid, 'keeper joins Fitzroy Cricket Club this year and has been invited to go with the team to tour England next year. All the best for a terrific career, Ron.'
Ron Furlong was a member of Ballarat's Golden Point Cricket Club before joining Fitzroy. During his first class career Ron Furlong played in 31 matches, often opening with Bill Lawry. Ron Furlong made 1722 first class runs, with an average of 32.49, including one 100 and eleven 50s. Ron Furlong's highest first class score was 137.
