Restricted Access

The following guidelines have been developed to ensure that all resources are made available in a responsible way for all clients of Federation University Library.

The Library does not promote the practice of censorship, but it takes seriously its duty of care to specific cohorts of students where it would not be appropriate for them to access some materials on the shelve, those under 18.

Materials that meet the criteria of the Restricted Access collection include:

  • books given the classification of 'R' under the Australian Government's film and literature classification scheme;
  • books that contain images depicting children or underage youth in a sexual manner;
  • other materials as recommended for inclusion by the Collection Management Committee, for example, those which contain explicit or overt sexual practices.

These guidelines relate only to book materials as non-book resources are dealt with by using appropriate packaging, i.e. held in locked cases with appropriate labelling as to the classification of the title and what is required to be able to borrow the item.
