Before you leave home

Your to-do list

Leaving home can be a busy, stressful time and we want to make sure your journey goes off without a hitch. Click on the links, print off this list, and tick off the jobs as you do them.

What to do How to do it
Book accommodationShort term: We recommend you book at least 1 week of accommodation before you arrive. Short-term options are available on-campus, or in the local area.
Long term: If you want to live on-campus for the whole year, you can even do this online before you leave (and there are scholarships available to help with the cost for International students).
Prefer to live off-campus? Make sure you read our guide to finding accommodation (pdf, 205kb)
Spend time with friends and family Sometimes in the excitement of leaving home we forget to make time to say goodbye to everyone - take time to check in with your loved ones, and make sure you let them know you arrived safely when you get here.
Pack your suitcase or car Most airlines have a pretty strict baggage allowance, so make sure you know what yours is (and stick to it) to avoid delays and embarrassment at the airport! Think about what you'll need to bring for the time of year (Victoria is cold from May - September). Take a look at our suggested packing list (pdf, 181kb) to guide you on what to bring (and what not to bring).
If you're a domestic student, your car probably also has a baggage allowance so make sure you check the boot space and suspension...
Open a bank accountAlready live in Australia? You may already have one, but check to see if your bank offers any special student accounts.
From overseas. Most Australian banks allow you to do this online from your home country - this is so useful to ensure you have access to cash as soon as you arrive, and don't need to bring heaps of currency with you. Major banks in Australia include: Commonwealth, ANZ, NAB, Bendigo Bank and Westpac
Listen to our pre-arrival podcasts What's it really like to be a student at Federation? Our students reveal their top tips in our ever-updating podcast series.(coming soon)
 Connect with other students
(and staff)
The wonders of modern technology mean you can meet some of your classmates before you even leave home: Join our Facebook group and keep an eye out for emails from us and our students. Please feel free to reply with any questions, or just to say Hi.
Organise your travel from the airport Whether you're coming from interstate or overseas, plan your travel carefully. Each of our campuses is served by an airport shuttle bus, but only at certain times of the day so don't get caught out by arriving at midnight.
