My life in Churchill
Daniel - 20 July 2023
I came to Churchill back in 2022 when I started studying at Federation's Gippsland Campus. I really wanted to become part of the community, which is why I chose to study in a smaller regional centre and found myself part of the United Church community, where I met many senior members of the church through the morning teas I was more than happy to be part of. I really enjoyed meeting the older community members, and I make the effort to spend time with them at the local libraries and even accompany them to some of their appointments - they love the company too! I’ve since found work with the La Trobe Community Health Service where I provide care to the senior citizens within the Latrobe Valley, the area where the Gippsland Campus is located.
When I am not spending time with community members, you’ll find me participating in many of the active clubs around Churchill. A highlight of these clubs is the Strzelecki Bushwalking Club. There are so many parks and places to explore, and the best thing about this club is get to be in nature, where I love to be.
I am also a member of the ParkRun club and of course, the Churchill United FC, where I get to spend time with members of the team that are similarly aged and like-minded to me. It’s great making friends and engaging in some fun and friendly inter-community matches with the neighbouring towns.
On campus, you’ll find me participating in the International Student Employability events. They have an initiative called “My Accent is My Superpower”, which teaches us how to overcome barriers faced by international students looking for employment, and as part of that, we celebrate the diverse range of skills that we, as international students, possess and can bring to the workplace.
I have been fortunate to also be selected as a Study Melbourne International Student Ambassador in 2023. I help to promote regional Victoria as an attractive student destination and advocate for regional universities like Federation Universities. I would love to see you on campus soon! Bye!
