Advice for students with families moving to Australia for study
Rabeya - 14 September 2024
Moving to Australia for study is a life-changing experience, and it becomes even more unique and challenging when you are doing it with an infant. My journey began in 2022 when I moved to Australia to pursue my PhD at Federation University, and I brought my little one along. Navigating the demands of academic life while caring for an infant was daunting, but with some careful planning, supportive partner, and the right mindset, it turned out to be an incredibly rewarding experience. Here’s some advice based on my journey that might help you as you embark on this adventure in your life.
Finding the right community
One of the first things I did was to get involved in the local community. I chose to study in a regional area, and I found that being part of a smaller, close-knit community made the transition smoother for my family and me. We quickly became involved in local events and activities, which helped us build connections and feel more at home. As a student with an infant, I also sought out parenting groups, playgroups, and community centres that offered activities for young children. These groups provided a support network, valuable advice, and much-needed social interaction. They also offered a great way for my baby to start socializing, making friends, and adapting to the new environment. I recommend finding a community that aligns with your interests, whether through campus residence, local organizations, religious groups, or clubs. These connections can significantly ease your family's adjustment to a new environment.
Managing your time
Balancing study and parenthood is no small feat, especially with an infant in tow. Time management became my best friend. I organized my day around my baby’s routine, scheduling study sessions during nap times and quieter moments. It’s crucial to communicate with your partner or any other support you have about your study commitments so that they can assist in caring for the baby when you need to focus on your academics. Remember, it’s okay to ask for help – you don’t have to do it all alone.
Exploring support services
Australia offers a range of support services for international students, and these can be a great help when you’re juggling studies and family responsibilities. I found the International Student Support services at Federation University to be incredibly helpful. They provided guidance on everything from visa requirements to finding childcare and schooling options for my child. Don’t hesitate to reach out to these services – they’re there to help make your transition as smooth as possible.
Exploring family-friendly activities
Australia is a wonderfully family-oriented country, and there are plenty of activities you can enjoy with your family. From baby-friendly parks and nature walks to library story times and parent-baby classes, there’s always something to do that’s both educational and entertaining for your little one. I often take my baby on leisurely walks around the beautiful parks in the Gippsland area, which was a great way to relax and bond. On weekends, my family and I would often participate in local events and explore the surrounding areas. From visiting nearby parks to joining family-oriented activities, there’s always something to do that can help your family feel more settled and integrated into the community.
Planning ahead
It is crucial to think about the long-term aspects of living in Australia with your family, especially when you are moving with an infant – planning is the key. This includes considering schooling options, healthcare, and housing. We made it a priority to research and plan these aspects before moving, which made the transition much smoother. Before arriving in Australia, we researched on healthcare options, including finding local paediatricians, understanding vaccination schedules, and figuring out how to access medical care when needed. Australia’s healthcare system is very accommodating, but having a plan in place can give you peace of mind. Additionally, make sure to explore housing options that are suitable for a family with an infant – consider factors like proximity to childcare, parks, and shops.
In conclusion, moving to Australia with an infant for study might seem overwhelming at first, but with the right approach, it can be a fulfilling and positive experience for both you and your child. By connecting with a supportive community, managing your time effectively, utilizing childcare services, engaging in baby-friendly activities, and planning ahead, you can make the most of this adventure. My family and I have embraced our new life here, and I’m confident that with the right preparation, you can do so. Good luck on your journey and hope to see you around the campus soon!
