Biography
Professor Joanne Porter is an accomplished research leader, director and academic with more than two decades of experience shaping research excellence, innovation and community impact across Australia. Currently the Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) and Director of the Collaborative Evaluation and Research Centre (CERC) at Federation University Australia, she has built one of Australia’s most active regional evaluation and research centres, delivering more than 70 major projects and securing over $5.2 million in external funding for CERC alone.
Joanne’s research portfolio includes more than 110 peer reviewed publications across health service innovation, community resilience, workforce capability, public health, emergency nursing, social licensing, renewable energy transformations, tourism and community health and wellbeing. She has led high impact evaluations for state and local governments, primary health networks, community organisations and industry, producing widely referenced reports that have informed policy, service design and community led initiatives in regional Victoria and beyond.
Driven by a commitment to regional equity, innovation and researcher development, Professor Porter continues to expand the universities’ national and international presence, strengthen institutional research capacity and lead work that brings meaningful and measurable benefit to communities.

Areas of expertise
Joanne leads a multidisciplinary research centre working with a variety of industry and funding partners to enhance the health and wellbeing of regional communities. Projects cover a wide variety of research and evaluation foci such as acute and community health, public health, new technologies (Advanced Air Mobility, Offshore Wind), social licensing, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander wellbeing, health promotion and education. Focusing on the interception between the initiative and the people and communities it impacts.
