Biography

My research and published work in theatre and performance has been both practical and theoretical investigating site-specific theatre, the politics and poetics of place, Indigenous theatre, contemporary paradigms and practices in theatre and performance, and practice led research. I am currently investigating the intersections between performing heritage and history, ecology and sustainability in theatre and performance. My research interests have developed from 15 years’ experience as a freelance actor and theatre creator in a range of industry environments from mainstream to independent production, film and TV. I co-founded Hildegard Theatre, an award winning independent theatre company that began creative investigations with culturally specific materials; song, dance and stories, and worked through intercultural collaboration to create performances that toured nationally and internationally.

My teaching and learning experience in theatre and performance, in theory and in practice, reflects my research interests.

I teach undergraduate Performing Art students (Acting and Music Theatre) Critical Studies and theatre history. I have developed, written and am Program Leader of a new undergraduate program, Bachelor of Applied Creative Arts. Working closely with the City of Ballarat and in also in Gippsland, with local and visiting artists, I continue to investigate Work Integrated Learning (WIL) via community based public performance projects undertaken by students. This applied work sits alongside teaching and learning in more traditional, academic settings.

My HDR supervisions follow related themes of theatre and performance practice as it intersects with history, heritage, eco-performance and sustainability.
