How to apply as an exchange or study abroad student

Come and study at Federation for a semester (or two) to broaden your education and experience life in Australia. Your time here could even count towards your degree back home.

Federation is one of Australia’s oldest universities. We have several campuses across regional Victoria and offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. But what we’re most proud of is our diverse student community. We welcome students from all over the world, and we’d love you to join us.

Study options

Exchange program
If you're enrolled at one of our partner universities, you can come and study at Federation University for one or two semesters through our exchange program. You'll earn credit towards your degree and be charged your usual tuition and student fees through your home university.
Study abroad program
If your university isn't one of our exchange partners, you can still come and study in Australia for one or two semesters through our study abroad program. You’ll pay Federation University a tuition fee of $10,700 AUD per semester (for three or four units).

How to apply

Exchange program eligibility

You must:

  • be enrolled in one of our partner institutions
  • have been officially nominated by your home institution to study at Federation University
  • have completed at least one year of full-time study at your home institution (or equivalent)
  • meet the minimum eligibility requirements for the level of study you plan to do
  • have a GPA of 2.6 out of 4 (or equivalent)
  • meet Federation University’s English language requirements
  • be at least 18 years old when your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) is issued.

Study abroad program eligibility

You must:

  • have completed at least one year of full-time study at your home institution (or equivalent)
  • meet the minimum eligibility requirements for the level of study you plan to do
  • meet Federation University’s English language requirements
  • be at least 18 years old when your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) is issued.

All exchange and study abroad students must enrol in a full-time load (three or four units per semester).

Explore the course structures listed below then read individual unit outlines. Ask your course advisor if the units you're interested in will actually count towards your degree. Make a list of six potential units (in preference order) in case some aren't available. Keep in mind that you won't be able to enrol in units with placements or work-integrated learning components. Your home university should approve your proposed study plan before you apply.

Institute of Innovation, Science and Sustainability (IISS)

Institute of Education, Arts and Community (IAEC)

Institute of Health and Wellbeing (IHW)

You can choose to study at Mt Helen, Berwick, Melbourne City or Gippsland, but note that some units might only be available at particular campuses.

Apply for exchange or study abroad via our online portal. You'll find detailed instructions on our 'How to apply' webpage.

Please select either XO1 for exchange or XH1 for study abroad as your course (not Bachelor Degree or Master’s Degree). If you're applying to study for one semester, select XO1.1.HALF for exchange or XH1.1.HALF for study abroad. If you're applying to study for two semesters, select XO1.1.FULL for exchange or XH1.1.FULL for study abroad.

After you apply

If your application is successful, we'll send you an offer letter. If any extra documents are required, we'll let you know.

To accept your place, you’ll need to return your signed offer letter and include proof that you've paid for Overseas Student Health Cover (see details below). If you’re a study abroad student, you’ll also need to provide proof that you’ve paid the Federation tuition fees.

After this, you’ll receive an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) letter.

You must have Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) to study in Australia. We can arrange this for you for a fee (through Bupa Australia) or you organise it yourself. Either way, you’ll need to provide proof of OSHC when you apply for a student visa.

If you’re from Norway, Sweden or Belgium you may not need OSHC. You can read more about health insurance on the Australian Government Study Australia website.

You must have a student visa to study in Australia. Follow the steps on the Department of Home Affairs website to apply for one. You’ll need your CoE, evidence of your OSHC, identity documents, evidence of your English language level and more. If you have any visa questions, contact the Department of Home Affairs.

Before the semester starts, there will be a compulsory on-campus orientation. This is when you’ll get to meet Federation staff and students, find out where to go for classes and learn about student resources and support services. You’ll also be enrolled into the subjects you've selected.

At the end of your time at Federation, we’ll send a copy of your academic transcript to your home university so you have your credits transferred.
