Internet Commerce Security Laboratory

Students from Federation University Australia, Mt Helen Campus recently participated in the third Cyber Security Challenge Australia on 7 & 8 May 2014.  The competition, which tested the student's skills in security, hacking and forensics, was run over 24 hours across Australia.

Dr Robert Layton, Research Fellow at the Internet Commerce Security Laboratory (ICSL) stated that "we find the competition is a great way to build skills and interest in security".

As a learning exercise, nothing beats jumping into difficult problems and working out how to solve them.  "Fed Uni's team ranked 27th out of 56 teams, a great effort given that many of the students were only beginning their study into security problems.  The competition will help to build skills that are collaboratively being developed with a new student group, the Technology Against the Dark Arts.  This student group aims to help students learn about security in weekly meetings and has a recorded strong following in only a few months of operations.

Sydney Institute of TAFE

Bala Subra, Head Teacher, Information Technology, Sydney Institute of TAFE, A Fed Uni Partner, advised that their students also participated in the challenge in Sydney with their advanced diploma students, who came 26th out of 56 teams competing and were able to beat all TAFE teams in the competition.
