Celebrating Federation University's latest graduates

Posted: Tuesday 18 October 2022

More than 800 Federation University Australia students will celebrate their graduation at ceremonies in Ballarat this week.

The students are among more than 1000 across the University’s campuses to mark the education milestone in front of family, friends and their classmates during October and November.

As part of Ballarat’s ceremony on October 19, Dr Paul Hemming AO will be awarded an Honorary Doctorate for his distinguished contribution to the University.

Dr Hemming served as Chancellor from 2012 to 2018, guiding the institution through an incredible period of change when the former University of Ballarat expanded into Gippsland, becoming Federation University in 2014.

A prominent general practitioner in Ballarat, Dr Hemming held high-level positions at numerous professional medical associations and was a founding board member and ambassador of Beyondblue.

Quotes attributable to Federation University Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Duncan Bentley

“Our students are graduating with the skills and knowledge employers need, along with incredible resilience built throughout the course of the global pandemic.”

“Watching graduates come together with family and friends to celebrate their achievements is an absolute joy and we look forward to seeing all they will achieve in their communities.”

“This year we are also delighted to be presenting an Honorary Doctorate to former Chancellor, Dr Paul Hemming who showed guidance and strong leadership during a time of great change for the institution.”

Quotes attributable to Dr Paul Hemming AO

"It is a very great honour to receive this award after serving the university for almost 12 years, initially appointed to the Council and then elected as its sixth Chancellor."

“Having lived and worked in the Ballarat community since migrating with my family to Australia in 1977, I was pleased to be able to support the university's important role as the leading higher education provider in rural and regional Australia and to provide increased opportunities for those who often struggle to achieve their goals in life."

"I am also proud to have assisted in the name change to Federation University Australia and to successfully expand our catchment area and grow our footprint into Gippsland, Brisbane and Berwick."

“Although I see this award as recognition of my time at the university, I would also like to thank the university, the Council, and all the staff I worked for giving me the opportunity to achieve so much during that time.”
