Ballarat's new mayor keeps things local with a Fed Uni MBA

Posted: Friday 13 November 2020

Federation University welcomes one of its own as the new Mayor of the City of Ballarat.

Cr Daniel Maloney studied his Master of Business Administration at Federation’s Mt Helen Campus from 2012 - 2014.

The father of two, who grew up in Wendouree, in Ballarat’s outer north-west, was elected to his second, four-year term as a Labour councillor for the city’s North Ward last week. He was then elected Mayor by a meeting of the full council on Wednesday.

Prior to studying for his MBA at Federation University, Cr Moloney earned a Bachelor of Arts in journalism and a Diploma of Business.

We are proud to have played a major part in Daniel’s educational journey and we wish him the very best as he continues to give back tirelessly to his and our local community.”

Quotes attributable to Cr Daniel Moloney

I’m incredibly honoured to be elected Mayor of Ballarat. It’s a huge undertaking as we start to safely bring our city out of pandemic-related restrictions and look to take advantage of new opportunities.”

I’m also proud to be part of Federation University’s alumni and most days find myself using the skills I learned in my MBA studies there.”

My first degree was a Bachelor of Arts and while that’s been invaluable in my past work as a journalist, in my co-owned public relations consultancy, and my community interactions as a councillor, the skills and learnings of the MBA have helped me navigate finance, human resources, business research and many other areas I previously considered weaknesses.”

The world has changed dramatically over the past several months, and those prepared to challenge and think differently will do well. That’s what Ballarat needs right now because we have a unique opportunity.”
