Fed TAFE Horticulture students planting the seeds of recovery

Posted: Thursday 28 May 2020

Students studying the Certificate III in Horticulture at Federation TAFE’s Wimmera Campus in Horsham have received innovative, hands-on, home study packs to ensure they can continue to progress with their studies.

The packs delivered to the students contain propagation media, various fertilisers, pots, seeds and plants so that the students can continue their practical work from home.

The materials will be used to give students practical experience in implementing a plant nutrition plan and a propagation plan.

They will be supported by teacher guidance and instruction via online platforms, enabling students to successfully complete two units of the Horticulture program at home.

The move to remote learning is a significant one for what is a highly hands-on program, which also involves learning to operate machinery and prune and propagate plants.

This is just one of the creative methods that educators are utilising to deliver their lessons at Federation TAFE’s Horticulture program.

Quotes attributable to Federation TAFE Executive Director, Barry Wright

“Our Horticulture students are making the most of their unique location within the Wimmera and Grampians area, as well as on-campus, to develop important hands-on skills such as planning plant displays, operating machinery, pruning and propagating plants.”

“This initiative allows our students to continue to grow, both theoretically and practically, in their studies.”
