Eleven FedUni geology, metallurgy and mining engineering students have broadened their skills and knowledge following a trip to the Nammuldi iron ore mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia.

Invited by Rio Tinto, the students worked with the company in a series of complex mining operations.

On arrival the students were exposed to Rio Tinto’s values of safe operation, teamwork, integrity and excellence. These values were reinforced throughout the two-day visit.

Rio Tinto creates partnerships with universities through providing vocation work for students and employing graduates.

The company operates a world-class iron-ore business, supplying the global seaborne iron ore trade.

“The students were impressed by Rio Tinto employees’ pride in the company’s high-performance culture and the safe performance of driverless trucks during loading, transporting, unloading and returning to loading point,” Larissa Koroznikova, Lecturer in Mineral Processing, said.

“Safety is the number one priority and students were introduced to the company approach to safety at the mine through exercises with experienced operation staff.

“Our students returned to Ballarat excited and enthusiastic about possible careers in the dynamic mineral industry. They also experienced the nature of fly in/fly out work and the excellent living conditions when at the operation.”
