A new art exhibition by Nicole Moorhouse at the Switchback Gallery traces her journey from her earliest discoveries and explorations to exhibiting professionally. 

The exhibition, ‘The Road Back’, has carefully created intriguing paintings that feature intricate patterning and shapes rendered with a bold colour palette.

Ordinary objects are the basis for new forms and compositions that entice the viewer to consider a meaning or narrative of what they see.

Nicole Moorhouse completed a Master of Visual Arts at the Gippsland Centre for Art and Design in 2015, has a number for solo exhibitions and was awarded the Dick Bishop Memorial Prize by Latrobe Regional Gallery in 2014.

She is interested in objects that were once functional and is attracted to their surface corrosion, the textures, and traces of decay and wear. The objects are taken through a process of deconstruction and renewal where they attain a new life, beauty and level of uniqueness.

“The removal of the objects' former identity ultimately detaches function and elevates the possibilities of the object and its story,” Nicole Moorhouse said.

“These enigmatic works are not only rewarding for the viewer, this exhibition also provides a valuable insight for students to see a GCAD alumni’s journey as an emerging artist and the success that can be achieved from dedication and hard work,” curator Neale Stratford said.

‘The Road Back’ continues until 9 November at the Switchback Gallery, Gippsland Centre for Art and Design, Federation University Australia, Gippsland Campus, Churchill.
