Students get hands-on at Federation University Sport Science Experience

Posted: Friday 28 June 2024

Over 450 Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) students from schools across Victoria will visit Federation University Australia this month as part of their Physical Education (PE) studies.

Students from 21 schools as far afield as Moama, Bendigo, Ararat, Kaniva, and Warrnambool, will attend one-day workshops at Federation’s Mt Helen Campus (Ballarat) and receive expert advice from lecturers within the University’s highly regarded Exercise and Sport Science Discipline, ranked in the top 100 globally by the Good Universities Guide.

The free program aligns with the VCE Unit 3 curriculum, “Movement Skills and Energy for Physical Activity” and comprises two sessions focused on understanding energy systems that underpin performance, and on understanding movement using Newton’s Laws and a Qualitative Movement Diagnosis.

Students will have the opportunity to get hands-on with state-of-the-art equipment and actively participate in learning with activities including VO2 and blood lactate tests to determine aerobic fitness, a Wingate anaerobic cycle test, strength, jump, and sprint tests, and more. Presentations on theoretical concepts and current research will further enhance learning and hopefully serve to inspire their future studies.

“The VCE PE program offers years 11 and 12 students the chance to experience high-performance sports science in a fun and engaging way to complement their VCE studies. The specialist equipment used for these experiences is typically only found at universities and Institutes of Sport and in these sessions, students get to interact with this equipment and use it to understand sports performance, with the help of specialised lecturing staff.”
