Appeal a final Federation decision to an external agency

If you receive a final decision from Federation but don't agree with it, you can submit a complaint to an external agency.

If you've reached the end of the university’s internal appeals or complaints process and you're still not happy with the outcome, you may be able to take your case to an independent external agency.

You can only appeal externally (make a complaint) if you've received a final decision from the university. This means you've been informed that the matter is considered closed and cannot be taken further.

How to appeal to an external agency

Follow these steps or download a pdf version (205 KB).

Explore the external agencies below to find out what they can and can't do, and the kinds of cases they will accept.

We can help you:

  • understand the role of external agencies
  • find out whether you have received a final decision
  • review your appeal draft and give you feedback before you submit
  • decide what evidence to include in your application.

Book an appointment if you'd like to chat.

Create a timeline of exactly what has happened in your situation, including every decision that the university made. Explain how you were treated unfairly – how university policies or procedures were breached – and gather evidence that supports your case.

Choose one of the agencies below and follow their submission process.

External agencies

Victorian Ombudsman
If you think you’ve been treated unfairly by Federation University, you can contact the Victorian Ombudsman. You'll need to explain what your complaint is about and attach supporting documents.
National Student Ombudsman
The National Student Ombudsman deals with complaints specifically about higher education providers. You can describe your situation via their online form, over the phone in writing or in person.
Australian Human Rights Commission
The Australian Human Rights Commission can investigate complaints of discrimination and breaches of human rights. The service is free and the process is easy to understand.
