Alumna Rosemary Selkirk self-published a children's picture story book called 'Are you afraid of Monsters?' The book has been illustrated by Cameron Singleton, a Melbourne artist. Librarians, booksellers and teachers regularly remark on the quality of the artwork and production values. "The attention to specific detail in the story reflects my training and experience in Ballarat", Dr Selkirk said. "Children aged between three and seven years enjoy the book".
"Dr Selkirk spent much of 2014 taking the book to public and school l libraries Australia-wide, over 500 of which now include 'Are you afraid of Monsters?' in their collections or classrooms. More than 500 copies have been bought by the public. "My readings of the book have been enthusiastically received; generating imaginative craft and artworks by children and useful discussions around fears", Dr Selkirk said. "This year I have even conducted readings in France and Malta generating sales in those countries! The book was also selected for inclusion in The Premiers Reading Challenge List.
