Bertolt Brecht was perhaps the single most important innovator of twentieth century drama. The Caucasian Chalk Circle is Brecht’s most cheerful and charming play, employing the techniques of both the Oriental and the Elizabethan theatre.  It is an allegory about justice, motherhood and the devastation of war that manages to be touching, thought-provoking, surprisingly topical – and very funny.
