Valuing environmental services in Indonesian rattan forestry industry (2014-2017)

Dr Wendy Wright is working with PhD student Afentina Hut and other colleagues at Monash University to develop and implement an approach to quantify the social, environmental and economic benefits of rattan agroforestry in Indonesia.

Conventional approaches to economic valuation of land use activities typically under-represent social and environmental values and result in biases in decisions regarding land use management which may lead to long term environmental and social degradation. An approach which values the complexity of ecosystems and the interrelationship between the economy and society is necessary to create a mechanism to provide local communities with the tools and incentives required to engage in sustainable use of ecosystems rather than converting land to shorter term cash crops.
