Geoffrey Barrell was born at Ballarat in 1921. He obtained a Bachelor of Science from the University of Melbourne after service during World War Two. Employed as Chemist and Assistant Brewer to Dr Carl Resch at the Ballarat Brewing Company between 1948 and 1950, Geoffrey Barrell was appointed lecturer in Organic Chemistry at the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB) on 11 March 1950. Geoffrey Barrell was highly involved with the development of Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education's Graduate Diploma in Malting and Brewing. The course started in 1971, and was the only one of its type in the Southern Hemisphere.


After leaving the Ballarat College of Advanced Education Geoffrey Barrell was took the position Research Manager at Joe White Maltings Limited, a position he held from 1978 until his death in 1981.
