Grade assignments offline

Moodle now provides support for grading assignments offline. Once enabled, staff are able to download a marking worksheet that can be edited with any spreadsheet software. eg. Microsoft Excel. After editing, the worksheet can be re-uploaded to Moodle and the grades and comments are then added to the assignment gradebook. Staff may either wait until all marking is complete, or upload the sheet periodically.

To enable offline grading

  1. Add or edit an existing assignment. See the Add an assignment guide for more assistance
  2. Check the Offline grading worksheet box. This is located in the Feedback types area of the Assignment settings.

  3. Click Save and return to course.

To download the offline grading worksheet

  1. Click assignment title
  2. Click View/Grade all submissions
  3. Select Download grading worksheet from the Grading action drop down list at the top of the page.

Note: How and where the file downloads is dependent on the computer and web browser you are using.

To edit the grading worksheet

The grading worksheet is a CSV file and will be opened on most computers by the default spreadsheet program. eg. Microsoft Excel. If this does not happen, open your spreadsheet program, then click File, then Open. Locate and confirm the grading worksheet to begin editing. Do not forget to save your work.

Note: If you have already commenced marking in Moodle, these grades and feedback will already be present in in the worksheet. 

To upload grading worksheet

  1. Click assignment title
  2. Click View/Grade all submissions
  3. Select Upload grading worksheet from the Grading action drop down list at the top of the page.

  4. Drag and drop the grading worksheet in to the upload box.
  5. When the file appears in the upload window, click Upload grading worksheet.

  6. Review changes to be made, then click Confirm. If you notice any anomalies, click Cancel.

  7. Moodle will now return a summary report of the changes made Click Continue to finish.
