Dr Ali Tolooiyan is the Deputy Director of the Geotechnical and Hydrogeological Engineering Research Group (GHERG) at Federation University Australia, working in the areas of computational mechanics, mining geotechnical engineering, soil dynamics, soil mixing and foundation systems. Ali is currently supervising 9 PhD students and leading the geotechnical and geomechanical division of GHERG. Ali works in close collaboration with the industrial partners of GHERG including; Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (Victorian Government); Energy Australia; Engie; AGL Energy; Australian Road Research Board (ARRB), BAUER Maschinen and Wagstaff Piling. He has heavily contributed in attracting more than AU$ 3.9 million research funding for GHERG. Ali has designed, established and manages the geotechnical engineering laboratory of GHERG so that it is one of the most advanced geotechnical engineering laboratories in Victoria. He is a professional member of Engineers Australia and the Australian Geomechanics Society (AGS), and is president of the AGS Latrobe Valley Geotechnical Group (LVGG).

Ali completed his PhD in the area of geotechnical engineering and geomechanics at the National University of Ireland, University College Dublin (UCD) in 2010 where he was subsequently employed as a Post-Doctoral researcher in the field of offshore geotechnical engineering at the UCD Geotechnical Research Group (GRG) until 2011. In 2012, he moved to Australia and joined GHERG at Monash University as a research fellow/lecturer (Level B) and subsequently took a senior research fellow/lecturer position (Level C) after the creation of Federation University Australia in 2014.

Ali has taught several geotechnical engineering subjects and numerical modelling and has been an active geotechnical consultant on a variety of national and international scale projects in Australia, Europe, Asia and the Middle-East.
