Step 1: Assess the project's ethical risk

For any human research project you consider may be low risk, you will need to formally assess the ethical risk this project presents to its participants by completing the HREC Risk Assessment Checklist (docx, 150kb).

The checklist is a series of questions with Yes/No responses. When you complete the HREC Risk Assessment Checklist and assess your project as presenting minimal ethical risk or less to participants, you are eligible to submit an Expedited application (docx 312kb) for review.

If you complete the HREC Risk Assessment Checklist and assess your project as presenting more than minimal risk to participants, you will need to submit a Standard Application (docx 350kb).

The HREC Risk Assessment Checklist is only required with submission of an 'Expedited' or 'low risk' application.

Student researchers must review the completed checklist with their supervisor before submitting any application.

Researchers should note that timing constraints are not an acceptable reason for seeking expedited review where projects are of more than low risk.
