As part of the Regional Youth Homelessness project, an interdisciplinary workshop was held at the University of Melbourne on 15 July 2013. New Perspectives in Homelessness Research: An Interdisciplinary Workshop brought together scholars in this field for collaborative discussions about conceptual issues in homelessness research and was convened by Dr David Farrugia (University of Ballarat) and Dr Jessica Gerrard (University of Melbourne).
CRN international guest Dr Marie-Elodie Perga from the French National Institute for Agronomical Research presented 'Disentangling the impacts of climate and local human perturbations on lake ecological trajectories: responses from recent sediment archives' on Friday 10 May 2013 at the University of Ballarat, Mt Helen Campus.
Prof Patrice Braun, Adjunct Professor, CRN presented Collaboration for Regional Resilience – Investigating Models and Metrics on Thursday 7 March 2013 at the University of Ballarat. Prof Braun shared insights on the role of collaboration in regional resilience, how we measure collaboration and regional development, and how we influence policy making in the process.
Information Analysis and Optimization of Systems was held on Monday 19 November at the Centre for Intelligent Systems Research (CISR), Deakin University, Waurn Ponds campus. The workshop was a joint effort between researchers at Deakin University and UB and covered the topics of applied optimization, informatics and systems modelling, manufacturing and production systems, decision support methodologies, technologies and products. The workshop recommended commercial applications and capacity building relevant to Australia as well as its international markets.
Prof George Kannourakis, Research Director at the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute, presented Research in Regional Victoria: the importance of passion, collaboration and tenacity on Tuesday 23 October 2012 at the University of Ballarat.
The first CRN Research Collaboration Workshop was held on Tuesday 24 July 2012, at the University of Ballarat. Approximately sixty CRN collaborators from UB and partner universities, Monash, Deakin and Melbourne, participated in a variety of workshops, discussion and planning across the day. Following was a public forum which opened the UB Sustainability Forum 2012 and featured speakers Professor Kate Auty, Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability, Victoria, and CRN Research Leaders, Professor David Karoly, University of Melbourne, and Professor Peter Gell, University of Ballarat.
Dr Robert Baier, a Senior Lecturer at University of Bayreuth, Germany, presented The Rubinov subdifferential for DC functions and its relation to other subdifferentials at the University of Ballarat on Friday 13 July 2012.
Dr Nicholas Welham, Editor-in-Chief, Hydrometallurgy, and Xstrata Zinc Alliance Associate Professor of Metallurgy, University of Ballarat, presented Publishing Papers – the view from the Editor's chair at the University of Ballarat on Wednesday 4 July 2012. This was an occasional seminar presented by the Graduate Centre Program, Research Services and the CRN.

Element 1 (Regional Science and Technology Innovation) held its first Workshop on 6 September 2011. Speaker for this Workshop was Professor Saeid Nahavandi (Deakin University).
Element 1 International Symposium/Workshops: Prof. David Gao organised an International Symposium on Complex Systems and Global Optimization and the 5th Sino-Australia Workshop on Optimization held jointly from 13 to 17 December 2011 in Shanghai, China. In 2012, at least one CRN research workshop to be held in UB.
Element 2 (Regional Social and Educational Connectedness and Health Innovation) held a Workshop on Friday 21 October 2011 at the University of Ballarat. Eighteen presenters and 50 attendees from University of Ballarat, University of Melbourne, 13Youth Research Centre and community stakeholders attended the workshop.
The official UB CRN launch took place at the UB Research Conference on Friday 4 November 2011. Senator the Hon Kim Carr officiated at the launch. Professor Margaret Shiel (CEO of the ARC) also attended the Conference and CRN Launch.
Element 3 (Regional Science and Technology Innovation) in collaboration with UB's Centre for Informatics and Applied Optimization (CIAO) planned an Optimization Workshop for December 1-2 2011.
Element 3 (Regional Science and Technology Innovation) in partnership with Grampians-Wimmera – Mallee Water held a Workshop titled Collaborative Partnerships: the Way forward for the Region, held on Tuesday 29 November 2011.
Element 2 Critters Publication Workshop held 22 November 2011 – working with five PhD students to develop journal articles from PhD work during the next 12 months. Attended by Professor John Smyth, Element 2 Leader, Dr David Farrugia,CRN Post Doctoral Fellow and 5 PhD students.
