Professor Kate Smith-Miles

Research Leader

Monash University

Professor Smith-Miles is Head of the School of Mathematical Sciences at Monash University. Previously, she was Chair in Engineering and Head of the School of Engineering and Information Technology at Deakin University, and she also held a Chair in Information Technology at Monash University.

In her extensive research career, she has been awarded over $10 million in competitive grants, including ten Australian Research Council grants, and has published two books on neural networks and data mining applications and more than 200 refereed journal and international conference papers.

She has been awarded the Australian Mathematical Society Medal for distinguished research in the Mathematical Sciences.

She is also highly regarded for her work in advancing the careers of fellow researchers, supervising to completion 18 PhD students. She aims to continue this mentoring work with the CRN.

“These days I enjoy helping other people do research as much as I enjoy doing research myself,” she said.

“Years ago when I got my first paper in a top quality journal or my first Australian Research Council grant, that was exciting, but I noticed that as time went on I got more of a thrill from the success of someone I had been mentoring, helping them reach their potential.”
