KENNETH KRONBERGER: BEHOLD THE ANIMATED DIORAMA!

HEIDI WOOD: OFF THE MAP

Paris-based Australian artist Heidi Wood’s immersive work will explore her ongoing curiosity about tourism and the unpopularity of tourist zones particularly within the ex-Soviet bloc. Creating her own promotional environment utilising a repertoire of commercial pictograms, mementos and symbols, Wood deliberately questions the very position of culture, the messages it can provide and the people it aims to target. Heidi Wood gained a Bachelor of Arts in printmaking at Victoria College, Prahran, Melbourne and went on to study at Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-arts, Paris, DNSAP, atelier Claude Viallat. Federation University Australia’s Arts Academy wishes to acknowledge the extraordinary achievements of our alumni who studied Visual Arts at Ballarat Technical Art School, Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education, Ballarat College of Advanced Education and Ballarat Teachers’ College, from 1955 up to and including 1979. Over the past decades, a diverse range of visual artists have graduated from the Arts Academy, some of whom have gone on to gain national and international recognition. SYLVIA HOLLIS: THE ASSUMED DIVIDE

The Jan Feder Collection is on tour from Gippsland Centre for Art and Design, Federation University. Jan Feder was an alumna of the Gippsland Campus who studied ceramics on the campus. She passed away in the mid 1980s. Her student peers raised funds to buy ceramic works in her memory. MAZIAR MORADI: ICH WERDE DEUTSCH (I BECOME GERMAN)

Ich Werde Deutsch (I become German) pictures young people, who were forced to leave their countries to start a new life as immigrants in Germany, as well as those who were born in Germany but have grown up under influence of their family's cultural background. The work is based on the impressions, fears, experiences, fates and losses of the young immigrants, by focusing on the individual circumstances of their lives. DAVID FERRY: THE INVADER’S GUIDE TO THE BRITISH ISLES

Providing a survey of David Ferry’s continued visual exploration of guides to British Heritage, this exhibition features work from series that span twenty-five years. The picture books, found in charity shops, are first subjected to simple cut and paste tampering; this is then refined through printmaking processes both traditional and digital. Resultant artist books and prints demonstrate a consistency of address that pokes fun at the polite and confident assertions of the conservative viewpoint. Michelle Zuccolo: From Flesh and Bone

In a new series of works and exhibition, following a recent International Fellowship in Italy and Austria researching classical and medieval art forms, Zuccolo presents a suite of intriguing drawings. Here she depicts people in situ - nuns and artists in the course of daily life preoccupied in thought, navigating complex spaces, juxtaposed with other mixed-media works portraying puppets from the ‘Punch and Judy’ series of a strange, satirical and whimsical nature. Philip Berry’s work brings to life the iconic Australian corner store - the local provedore selling everything from a bottle of milk to a pack of cigarettes to a range of small goods. Once a hub and important landmark within the community, abuzz with conversation and ablaze with advertising slogans, they stood like social beacons amid the drab, dull endless sprawl of suburbia. Celebrating these abandoned often reused or reappointed places, Berry’s work not only highlights the disappearance of the personable local proprietors and their conjoined shop residences, but also the sense of community that has disappeared with them. This research project draws on the experience of being on the battlefield, and seeks to visually examine the ways in which the landscape has changed since the battle took place. Over the last 35 years, I have worked mainly in printmaking, sculpture and drawing. My ideas are always exploring aspects of people, place and more recently, aspects of aging. Headley based himself in the ceramics studio whilst artist-in-residence at the Arts Academy, University of Ballarat in 2009. During his residency Chris was spotted dragging his ceramic figures and photographic equipment across mullock heaps near Ullina, around Lake Wendouree and inside the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery where he was photographing Mount Warrenheip. MICHAEL GRANT: PRELUDE

During 2008 and 2009, Michael Grant undertook a personal pilgrimage to the battlefields of Papua New Guinea, in particular, to attempt to understand events that took place during the Second World War. In this exhibition, in a series of portrait and landscape paintings, Michael interprets and expresses a very personal, visual response to significant historical events, loss and remembrance. Doug Spowart and Victoria Cooper traverse themes, both personal and political, in the investigation of, and the representation of sites in the Australian landscape. The work connects contemporary social issues with historical, scientific and mythological insights intrinsic in each site.
