University a major partner in successful CRC projects

Posted: Wednesday 8 March 2017

Federation University Australia will play a major role in two Co-operative Research Centre projects that have received substantial funding from the Federal Government this week.

The CRC for High Performance Soils has been awarded $39.5 million over 10 years to help Australian farmers make decisions on complex soil management issues.

The funding is designed to optimise productivity, yield and profitability and ensure long-term sustainability of farming businesses.

“The University’s nationally recognised research expertise in this field will assist better management and decision making in the use and development of high performance soils,” Professor Leigh Sullivan, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), said.

“We also have expertise in the use and assessment of brown coal to create novel technologies and products that increase soil fertility and function.”

The FedUni team for this project will include researchers from our Centre for eResearch and Digital Innovation and the Faculty of Science and Technology.

The team will be led by Associate Professor Helen Thompson with Associate Professor Peter Dahlhaus and Dr Vince Verheyen.

The University also will play a role in the newly funded CRC for Food Agility. This CRC has been awarded $50 million over 10 years to help the nation’s food industry grow its comparative advantage through digital transformation.

Associate Professor Helen Thompson will be the FedUni team research leader.

“Our award-winning researchers in this area will apply their acknowledged leading expertise in digital solutions to improve the production and value of fresh and processed food in Victoria and elsewhere,” Professor Sullivan said.

“We look forward to applying our research and assisting the primary industries that have given such strong support to FedUni’s research in achieving their objectives through these two CRCs.”
