Student stories

Aline Bakulikira

"I can study without worrying about my finances."

"I chose the field because I really want to help those who are disadvantaged and can't access hospital. Being a nurse is a very rewarding job as you are able to help those who are most in need.

This qualification is going to change my life and I hope that by being a nurse I will be able to change the lives of disadvantaged people around the world.

I am very committed to my studies and my scholarship has meant I have been able to study without worrying about my finances."

Rebecca Bredin

Rebecca Bredin"It's never too late to fight for your dreams."

As a single, working, studying mother of three I have often struggled to find the right balance between financial commitments, study and family time. This scholarship has reduced my financial burdens and has improved the quality of my work.

The scholarship has meant I have more time to undertake valuable (yet unpaid) work placements which provide me with the skills, industry experience and contacts that support the theoretical knowledge I am learning in my degree.

My degree will open opportunities to a fulfilling career and financial security. More importantly, it will show my children that it is never too late to fight for your dreams.

Joshua Callander

Joshua Callander"I can now focus solely on doing my best"

I spent several years in the IT field but never enjoyed it. A few years ago I decided to return to university. I found a love for microbiology and immunology and hope to enter a career in a lab.

This scholarship has alleviated a lot of the financial concerns that come with returning to study full-time. I can now focus solely on doing my best in my exams and assignments.

Dianne Robertson

Dianne Robertson"I had to set my dream aside but now I'm living it."

"As a young child my dream was of being a nurse and caring for others, a dream I had to set aside for many years due to family commitments. I now have the fortunate opportunity to once again pursue that dream and have just completed the first year of the bachelor degree. The success of my studies has further strengthened my belief that nursing is not only my career choice but has also defined who I am as a person.

The Foundation Scholarship is more than just financial aid; it has eased the stress of the daily budgeting that I have to undertake to juggle my home and study commitments."

Tara Schultz

Tara Schultz"I want to excel rather than just survive."

"Having a scholarship gives me a buffer, a safety net, and the encouragement that most people take for granted. I wanted to excel rather than just survive, and that's what my scholarship is helping me to do.

My motivation for success in my studies comes out of a real passion for social policy and community work. Growing up I was surrounded by drugs, crime, illness and despair. It was my passion for the social sciences that kept me going, and helped me to find a way out of that world.

My career aim is to improve the social programs that help youth experiencing homelessness, mental illness, poverty, drug addition and abuse."

Darren Thomas

Darren Thomas"I am building a future for my children, and the world."

"My greatest regret in life was leaving school at an early age. After working in the civil construction industry for many years, I am now pursuing my dreams of higher education and studying the environmental and geological aspects of my work.

Balancing full-time study and family commitments is challenging both emotionally and financially, but I know that what I am doing is going to make a real difference as we work towards a more sustainable future.

I have just finished the first year of my study with outstanding results that I wholeheartedly believe would not have been possible without the incredible assistance of the Foundation."
