Inaugural International Alumnus from Timor-Leste

FedUni's Inaugural International Alumnus of 2014 is Alfredo Pires, Timor-Leste Minister for Petroleum and Mineral Resources from 2012 to 2017. This award was presented at FedUni on 3 April 2014.

Alfredo Pires studied at the former University of Ballarat (now Federation University Australia) and became the first Timorese national to graduate as a geologist. Since returning to Timor-Leste, Alfredo Pires has used the knowledge and experience gained to advocate for sustainable resource management and to design policies intended for economic development.

Alfredo Pires was appointed Minister for Petroleum and Mineral Resources following the re-election of the Gusmão Government in 2012. In this role, Minister Pires has spearheaded the development and reform of the petroleum sector, whilst also fostering the profession of geology among young Timorese. The Alfredo Pires Scholarship is offered to a Timor-Leste citizen as a full-time research Masters and/or PhD scholarship in Geology at Federation University.
