An important symposium on education research and innovative teaching will be held at Federation University Australia’s Gippsland Campus on Monday, 10 December.

The PeCALE (Pedagogy, Curriculum, Assessment and Learner Engagement) research group from the University’s School of Education will host the symposium, titled Research Informed Practices: Practical Applications of thinking routines and strategies in teaching innovations.

“The symposium will bring together educational research with practical guidance to allow participants to implement evidence-based teaching innovations that align with the Critical and Creative Thinking capabilities strand of the Victorian curriculum,” Dr Anna Fletcher, Lecturer in Teacher Education, said.

“In addition, two visiting scholars from Halmstad University in Sweden will give a presentation about their work with schools to develop thinking protocols as part of coaching.”

The symposium is primarily aimed at school leaders, teachers and community stakeholders who are interested to:

• Learn about developing increasingly complex and sophisticated processes of thinking across the curriculum from local and European researchers
• Understand how to apply evidence-based approaches to promote critical and creative thinking capabilities within your educational context
• Be ready to apply and respond to the Critical and Creative Thinking capabilities strand of the Victorian curriculum

The PeCALE research group consists of 20 researchers from the University’s School of Education. The group seeks to understand pedagogy, curriculum, assessment and learner engagement within a variety of diverse formal educational contexts, as well as informal and community contexts.

The conference will commence at 9.30 am for a 9.50 start and finish at 2.30pm. It will be held in Room 5N 158 at the Gippsland Campus, Churchill.
