Celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, Federation University Australia’s Internet Commerce Security Laboratory (ICSL) has become a national leader in its field. 

The Laboratory was established as a cyber security research laboratory in 2008 with the Victorian Government, Westpac and IBM as key partners.

“The ICSL is an internationally leading cyber security and analytics research laboratory,” the Director, Associate Professor Iqbal Gondal, said.

“Our team conducts research applying advanced analytic techniques to cyber crime and big data issues for industry.”

The Laboratory continues to expand its skills and industry partnerships in working on research that has real world applications to cyber security issues. 

Opened at the University’s Mt Helen Campus in May 2008, the Laboratory’s first Director was Associate Professor Paul Watters.

“The ICSL has grown enormously in developing its cyber security research capabilities and training PhD researchers over the past ten years,” Associate Professor Gondal said.

“The ICSL has developed unique capabilities in Countering Malware and phishing attacks, IoT security, threat intelligence, fraud and scam detection and providing strategic support to our partner organisations in enhancing their expertise.

“The University thanks our partners, the Victorian Government, Westpac and IBM, for their large contribution in making the ICSL such a large success.”

Westpac support has been vital in training researchers/students in regional area in cyber security discipline.

In other milestones:

2010: The ICSL hosted the CTC workshop in Ballarat; The Australian Federal Police signed as an industry partner

2012: Outside study program undertaken by Associate Professor Watters with the AFP; Partnership agreements with Westpac and AFP renewed

2014: Associate Professor Iqbal Gondal appointed as new Director

2016: Partnership agreement with Oceania Cyber security centre

2018: Westpac signs agreement for another five years

2013-2019: The ICSL hosts Malware Reverse Engineering Conference

“The ICSL looks forward to another eventful ten years of research with our partners," Associate Professor Gondal said.
