Arts Academy students present Shakespeare productions
Posted: Friday 20 April 2018Acting and music theatre students from Federation University Australia will perform two William Shakespeare plays in Ballarat over the next three weeks.
The productions, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Margaret of Anjou, will both be held at the Arts Academy, Camp Street.
“Our second and third year students are delighted to present these two outstanding productions,” Associate Professor Kim Durban said.
“The productions will be Shakespeare as people have never witnessed before.”
To celebrate William Shakespeare’s birthday and the new productions, local secondary school students and members from the renowned Shakespeare Republic will attend a preview dress rehearsal on Monday.
A birthday cake will be cut at 1.15 pm, Monday, 23 April, at the Helen Macpherson Smith Theatre, Camp Street.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Director Greg Stone
Friday 27 April - Saturday 5 May
Drama, politics, romance, comedy, magic, music and mystery – this play truly has it all. Four young lovers escape the stifling, conservative, patriarchal government, only to fall prey to the mischievous politics of the mystical world.
Margaret of Anjou, a ‘new’ play by William Shakespeare (pirated by Professor Elizabeth Schafer and Philippa Kelly), Director Kim Durban
Thursday 26 April - Saturday 5 May
Experience the Ballarat premiere of Shakespeare's most feminist play. Written to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death (2016), Margaret of Anjou could change the way we see Shakespeare.
As Margaret matures from feisty princess to scheming queen, we see a female role that is an ‘Everest’ on a par with King Lear.
