University Chancellor among Australia Day Award Recipients

Federation University Australia has applauded its Chancellor, Dr Paul Hemming, on receiving an Order of Australia (AO) in this year’s Australia Day Awards. 

“On behalf of the entire University community, I congratulate Dr Hemming on receiving this prestigious national honour,” Vice-Chancellor Professor Helen Bartlett said.

“Dr Hemming has enjoyed an outstanding medical and professional career, as well as being an exemplary Chancellor of our University. His service and commitment to FedUni has been inspirational.”

The citation for Dr Hemming’s award is: ‘For distinguished service to higher education administration, to medicine through contributions to a range of professional medical associations, and to the community of central Victoria, particularly as a general practitioner’.

“I am very grateful and humbled to receive such a high honour as the Order of Australia,” Dr Hemming said.

“My family, colleagues and friends have all contributed to my work and service and I thank them for this.

“The award also is a tribute to Federation University Australia and its dedicated staff and students.”

Born and educated in the United Kingdom, Dr Hemming and his family moved to Australia in 1977 and settled in Ballarat. He is married to Linda and has two daughters and six grandchildren.

Dr Hemming has been Chancellor of Federation University Australia since 2012 and a Council Member since 2007.

He has had an extensive medical career as a General Practitioner in Ballarat and Western Victoria.

Dr Hemming was a founding Board Member of beyondblue from 2000 to 2007 and has been President of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.

He was also President of the Australian Medical Association (Victoria) from 1991 to 1992 and has served on numerous Federal Government medical bodies and tribunals.
