High school students have embarked on a two-month project with Federation University Australia and the City of Casey designed to give young minds a taste of what life is like at university.

The 2017 FedUni Casey Project kicked-off on Thursday 27 July, with almost 100-year nine students from five local schools across the shire taking part at FedUni’s Berwick Campus.

Over the next two months, students will experience university life by spending time on campus, meeting academics, attending lectures, and completing a group assignment on the theme: “What makes a SMART city?”

Understanding the potential of new and emerging technologies to create a smart city is the goal of the 2017 FedUni Casey Project. The task aims to enhance students’ knowledge and skills in applying critical thinking and ethics, problem solving, developing interpersonal relationships as well as communicating effectively as a team.

The FedUni Casey Project will culminate in the students presenting their assignments to a panel, with the winning team taking home the official FedUni Casey Project trophy.  

Federation University Australia’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Andy Smith, was delighted so many students were keen to take on the FedUni Casey Project.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to expose young minds to the potential opportunities accessible at a higher education institution like Federation University Australia,” Professor Smith said. 

“The program has been designed to challenge students to think outside the box. Come up with creative solutions and opportunities to real life problems, specifically for the City of Casey."

Leveraging technology as a theme in this year’s FedUni Casey Project - Creating a SMART city – is one of the City of Casey’s strategic priorities to boost innovation in service delivery and operations, by empowering community members to utilise new and emerging technologies.
