Biography

Barbie is the Associate Dean, Learning and Teaching for the Faculty of Science and Technology.  She teaches organic and environmental chemistry and her research is in environmental analytical chemistry. Over recent years this has included identifying sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urban air, investigating iodine deficiency in pregnant women in the Gippsland Region, rehabilitation of acid mine waste and development of photo-catalytic water treatment.  She is currently working with the GHERG on a number of mine rehabilitation projects, in particular looking the chemistry associated with long term ash disposal options and development of artificial soils.

Barbie is also undertaking research on effective teaching and learning in chemistry education, in particular flexible delivery to on and off-campus cohorts and developing ways to provide authentic learning experiences in the online environment.  Her recent studies have looked at the way learning management systems can be used to promote self-directed learning.
