Biography

Associate Professor Madhu Chetty obtained his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 1992. As an academic/researcher, he has worked in several universities such as University of Melbourne, Australia; V. National Institute of Technology (earlier VRCE), India; Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands and at Monash University, Australia. While at Monash, A/Prof Chetty worked in the ECSE (Electrical and Computer Engineering) department from 1995-2000. Subsequently, he joined the then Gippsland school of Information Technology, Monash University. With the Gippsland campus of Monash joining Federation University Australia, he now works as a full time Associate Professor at the new university from January 1st 2014. On invitation, A/Prof Chetty also served as Visiting Associate Professor at India's prestigious IIT Bombay (2013-2014) and also offered Visiting Fellowship at the renowned Systems Biology Research Centre at University of Warwick (2013).  In his capacity as a Principal Fellow (honorary) in the School of Engineering, University of Melbourne, and also as an Associate Professor (adjunct) at Monash University, Madhu continually collaborates with renowned researchers of the two universities. As lead CI, he has secured competitive national research grants to fund his research with international collaboration.

He is Associate Editor of Elsevier's Neurocomputing journal. He also served as Guest Editor for two special journal issues published by Elsevier and was also editor for Lecture Notes in Bioinformatics for Springer. He has supervised various post-doctoral researchers who were funded through his Cat-1 research grants. He is also actively involved in serving the research community. He was General Chair of Bioinformatics Conference at Melbourne. He also served as Co-General Chair, Steering Committee member, Special Session chair, Technical Chair, Special Chair in international conferences. He is also serving as assessor of ARC research grant applications. He is a member of the faculty's research committee and the Faculty Education Board and a representative of Federation University on NICTA (now Data61) committee. As "Faculty HDR (Higher Degree by Research) coordinator", he contributes actively to the research training within the faculty.

As main supervisor, I have also supervised to completion a number of doctoral research students working in machine learning, optimisation, computational intelligence and bioinformatics. Currently, five PhD students are working under my supervision.

My research is focused in systems biology (holistic understanding for comprehending nature's choreography of life) and also protein biology (protein structure prediction). The system biology research has resulted in novel genetic models (based on eg dynamic Bayesian network, S-system approach, ordinary differential equation etc.) which are now being studied for carbon sequestration and solar bio-fuel with cyanobacteria commonly referred as blue-green algae (sustainability and climate change). Protein structure prediction research has produced simplified novel protein models and evolutionary algorithms (e.g. memetic algorithm, genetic algorithms etc) which we intend to apply for predicting difficult trans-membrane structures. 

Since 2003, I have published over 130 research papers which include over 30 high-impact journal papers and approximately 100 peer reviewed conference publications and book chapters. Journals where I published include PLOS ONE (ERA A), Bioinformatics (ERA A*), Journal of data mining and knowledge discovery (ERA A*), IEEE Transactions in Evolutionary Computation (ERA A*), BMC Bioinformatics (ERA A) BMC Systems Biology, IEEE/ACM Transactions in bioinformatics and computational biology, Algorithms for molecular biology, Neurocomputing, Cognitive Neurodynamics and so on. Many of our papers have received award nominations and one of these presented in flagship bioinformatics conference in Vancouver received the "Best Paper Award". We have also developed Open Source Research Software (see http://code.google.com/p/globalmit/ ). GlobalMIT, an open-source toolbox, for learning the globally optimal DBN structure using a recently introduced information theoretic based scoring metric, is available freely in public domain. It has been downloaded 4770 times from global researchers (83 countries with US leading with 1630 download) in the last 2.5 years.

I am actively involved in serving research community. I was General Chair of Bioinformatics Conference at Melbourne. I have been guest editor for special issues of journals in computational biology. I am also serving as associate editor of Elsevier's Neurocmputing journal. I am also serving as assessor of ARC research grant applications.
