Since hearing the inspiring lectures of Prof Jim Bowler on Mungo Lady and the geomorphic history of the Willandra Lakes, I have been interested in the long term interplay between humans and their environment. I use the assemblages and shell chemistry of aquatic invertebrates (ostracods, foraminifers, molluscs) to interpret environmental change, both in the long term (millennial scale) and the more recent (e.g. impact of European settlement). I am particularly concerned with differentiating between background climatic variability and enhanced anthropogenic effects. I take great pleasure in engaging students in debate about our environment and how we can work towards better management for a sustainable future. My research areas include coastal wetlands, salt lakes and groundwater ecology and long-term climate and environmental change.
