Kate Smith - A Country Practice

Wed 4 Sep - Thu 3 Oct 2013

Originally from Cootamundra in New South Wales, Kate Smith responds to the rural setting of the campus to present A Country Practice. Exhibition curated by Francis Parker.

Kate Smith was the 2013 MUMA artist in residence at Gippsland Centre for Art and Design. Each year, Melbourne’s premier contemporary gallery, Monash University Museum of Art selects an artist for a residency at GCAD and the artist mounts a MUMA-curated show later in the year at the Centre’s Switchback Gallery

The exhibition title looks back to the popular Australian television series of the 1980s and early ‘90s; Smith’s exhibition looks back to the artist’s student years at the School of Art at the Australian National University with her attempt during the residency to cover all the media offered in GCAD’s studios for painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography and digital media. This retrospective regard sees her return to printmaking, or to her earlier desire to study photography and textiles, while also including the knowingly naïf abstract paintings and assemblages that are her principal form of expression.
