Dylan Martorell: D'ameublement
Wed 5 Sep - Thu 11 Oct 2012
‘Dylan Martorell: D'ameublement', surveyed the work of Dylan Martorell who was the Gippsland Centre for Art & Design/MUMA artist in residence in April.
Presented by Monash University Museum of Art (MUMA) and curated by Francis Parker, the exhibition was one of two each year guest-curated at Switchback by Melbourne's premier contemporary art space and was an exquisite mélange of site-specific installation, sound, found-object art, musical instrument making and performance.
Fresh from a residency in Thailand, the artist combined work produced there with pieces he produced when a resident at GCAD earlier in the year. Says MUMA curator Francis Parker, ‘Martorell animated the space with videos which document the making of the sculptures and his collaboration with GCAD student Jamie Hall, and also the workshops that Martorell conducted in the Wat Phratat, the temple grounds near ComPeung, building robotic percussion instruments with Buddhist monks. The exhibition not only brought together work from the two residencies but combined their sounds within the one space.'
