Chris has been a Science and Maths teacher for over 25 years in the Ballarat region. He has been working as a lecturer at Mt Helen in a partnership arrangement with local secondary schools for over 10 years. Chris cherishes this opportunity to continue teaching in schools whilst working in Teacher Education.
Chris works within the MTeach(Secondary) team where most of the PST experiences happen in partnership schools, mainly Ballarat High School. This in-school, immersive approach to initial teacher education is proving to be extremely effective. It allows the PSTs and Teacher Educators to engage with the realities and issues associated with schooling first hand and rub shoulders on a daily basis with students, teachers and school leaders. It is also the focus of a number of areas of research collaborating with Dr Amanda McGraw and Dr Sharon McDonough. Chris teaches science curriculum and professional learning community subjects within this program.
Apart from school-university partnerships, Chris is passionate about researching in the Science Education space. He is currently in the final stages of completing a 3 year, OLT funded, collaborative project with the RUN universities titled: “It’s Part of My Life: Engaging university and community to enhance science and mathematics education”, the final report being due in June. The success of this project has enabled a new approach to helping PSTs increase their confidence and competence in teaching Maths and Science and has been embedded into a number of courses within the School of Education. This was achieved with the help of Bruce Schmidt and Dr. Rob Davis.
